Saccade

Saccade is a new project by Bay Area-based tattooer, Pang. In collaboration with Casper Go and Sylvia Ke, Pang uses eye-tracking data to generate tattoo designs based on sentimental imagery provided (and looked at) by clients. Playing with the permanence of tattoo and the fleeting nature of memory, Pang tattoos one’s impression of a photo rather than the photo itself. In this project, rapid eye movements are captured, quantified, massaged through TouchDesigner, and etched into the skin. With Saccade, looking at and looking back are captured at once in a freeze frame and embedded in a tattoo. As the viewer convenes with the memories embedded in the picture on the screen, their gaze transforms into a permanent ephemera.

As our perception changes in our mind, the tattoo morphs on our skin. Through Saccade, the mercurial nature of a core memory is articulated in the aging and evolution of a tattoo. This project is one vector in my practice of expressing permanence as a spectrum.

Tools:

Tattoo

Once finalized, the outputs generated by TouchDesigner will be transferred onto the skin and tattooed.

TouchDesigner x Gaze-Tracking

We used Touchdesigner and Gaze-Tracking to map the movements of the viewers eye to a coordinate plane. Both the speed and duration of their gaze will inform the shape and density of the design.

Oral History Project

Alongside each tattoo, I also record short interviews with my client describing the photo’s significance. These will be documented as part of an oral history project showcasing the sentimental force of tattoos.

Melrose Botanical Garden: Project Premiere

The first tattoo from Saccade was done live and showcased on March 2nd with live sound performances by Chou Chou, Sylvia Ke, Jellyeee, and Anti-Rocker. Showcased alongside works by Sarah Sitkin, David Bayus, David Kasprzyk, and Kit Meadows, Saccade is an embodiment of the intimacy between body and machine.
